Gropius House, Lincoln, USA 1938

Walter Gropius House

After leaving London and the Isokon Building Gropius came to Massachusetts to accept a teaching position at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. Philanthropist Helen Storrow provided land and funds. Gropius designed the house through 1937 and it was built the following year in 1938, he lived there till his death in 1969.

The visit to the house was a personalised tour, with a guide. Photos could be taken outside but not inside, so no photos of its sizeable collection of Bauhaus and related articles, including Marcel Breuer prototypes and Isokon products, not many of which would have made to America.

Date of visit: June 2013
